Time layered upon time. One buried layer seeping into another. An appropriate analogy for my journey in art. Drawing, watercolor, printmaking, then an introduction to clay, production pottery, hand building, and sculpture finally led to a course of study in Majolica at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. The light bulb in my brain exploded! I realized that all my previous explorations could be utilized in this one wonderful technique.
Majolica is tin, or in my case, zircon-opacified earthenware that will clearly hold drawing and brushwork in bright colors on a white background in the low firing range. To achieve my color work, I use low fire ceramic stains mixed with frit and water. All my earthenware pieces are originals - either wheel thrown or handbuilt.
I will still produce a few high fire pieces, mostly for outdoor use, but this new direction seems so logical. My lifetime of experience has come full circle.
