Advanced ceramics students are now eligible for independent study at CMA! This option is available for a limited number of students that have taken at least three ceramics classes at CMA. Your registration fee provides access to the studio during open studio hours, a locker for storage, access to studio tools and equipment, and a professional teaching artist mentor available to get you setup and answer any questions you may have through email. Studio hours run from 1/8/23 - 3/26/23 which coincides with our winter ceramics class schedule. Students must be willing to sign a agreement and are capped at 50lbs of clay per session. As an educational ceramics studio maintained by our Canton Ceramics Artists Guild volunteers who fire students work, we are unable to accommodate production potters. Students with ceramics experience outside of CMA are not eligible for registration as students will need a strong working knowledge of CMA studio safety and procedures.

This class is available for advanced students that have taken at least four ceramics classes at CMA or have received instructor approval to take the class. Form, surface design, glazing, and firing will be explored in greater depth during this class. Advanced students who have taken five or more CMA ceramics classes or working at a level determined to be advanced by the instructor will be required to do their own firing in cooperation with the Canton Ceramic Artists Guild to deepen their understanding of the process.

Students will learn to build their fundamental artistic skills essential to any artist. Create unique 2D art projects using a variety of drawing and painting art materials. Offering this 6-week course in-person! Inspired by the still lifes in the exhibit "Right Place, Right Time: Paintings by Robert Coleman Jackson." Delve into how artists create meaning through rendering objects and discover the historical significance of why the still life has been the most popular subject matter of all time! Explore deeper elements of composition, master copies, developing an image over time, sighting/measurement, drawing from life, and more. Time will be allotted to work during class, offering one on one attention with instructor help and feedback. Kit Palencar will tailor instruction to your individual needs and interests. Offering this NEW 6 week course in-person! Create and wear your own handmade pair of earrings. In this class, you will design either a dangle or post pair of sterling silver earrings set with cabochon stones of your choosing. Learn metalsmithing techniques, such as soldering, cutting, and bezel setting to create a one of a kind piece of your very own. Have you taken a jewelry class before? Make a companion piece to match! Offering this 6 week course in-person! Learn to see like a photographer and go from taking snapshots to purposeful, well-composed images that reflect your personal vision. Master the buttons and dials on your camera and shoot in modes other than Auto. This course introduces participants to the creative and technical possibilities of digital photography. Some off site subject mater near the museum and within walking distance downtown will be used for class projects and inspiration including visiting a professional photography studio! Topics include camera operation, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance, lighting, and composition. New and experienced photographers are welcome. Taken the class before? Offering this NEW 4 week class in our ceramics studios! This class is available for experienced students that have taken at least one ceramics class with a solid working knowledge of throwing, hand building, trimming, carving, and faceting. In Japan the words Neriage (Nair-ee-ah-gee) and Nerikomi (nair-ee-kO-me) refer to different ways colored clays are used. Neriage is the act of mixing at least two colored clay bodies together, which will create swirling and spiraling patterns when thrown on the wheel. Nerikomi works are hand built and then carved or faceted into to create a variation of patterns on the clay surface accenting the mixed clay bodies. Explore these exciting new techniques, make your own colored clay, and discover glazing techniques to highlight the natural beauty of your finished pieces.
