The Canton Museum of Art has a new Raku Kiln courtesy of the Canton Ceramics Artists Guild! Learn the fundamentals of Raku firing which is a different firing technique than that of a regular kiln. This process is done outdoors, using a gas kiln. This exciting firing technique involves pulling red hot ceramic ware out of a kiln and placing the ware into a container with combustible materials. During this two-step workshop, students will discuss the process and create their clay pieces on day one and then fire on day two. Students may make and fire up to 3 works.
Create your own fun and functional ceramic mug while learning about the fantastic flavors of coffee and all it has to offer! A professional barista from Canton's own Carpe Diem Coffee Shop will guide you through a taste testing of different coffees. While sipping on your favorite flavors learn how to make a personalized drinking mug of your very own using stoneware clay and basic hand building techniques. All levels of experience are welcome. (Students will need to make arrangements to pick up fired pieces two weeks after workshop.)
Students with a firm foundation in basic technical skills will enjoy this class. Form, surface design, glazing, and firing will be explored in greater depth during this class. Advanced students with five sessions or the equivalent, (or working at a level determined to be advanced by the instructor) will be required to do their own firing in cooperation with the Canton Ceramic Artists Guild to deepen their understanding of the process.
Beginning students will be taught the basics of hand-building and wheel-work while intermediate students will refine their skills. Individual projects will include functional pottery and decorative work. Glazing techniques will be taught, finished ware will be discussed, and demonstrations will be given.
*Additional costs, not included with class cost: *All CMA ceramics students are required to purchase their clay from the CMA; the cost is $40.00 for 25 pounds of clay and includes cost of glazes and firing.
