COMMUNITY ART PROJECT COMING TO CMA
FEBRUARY 4TH - MARCH 4TH, 2022!

The Canton Museum of Art announces the launch of The Artchemist Project, a multifaceted community art project designed to explore what happens when chemistry and art collide!

An alchemist is a person who transforms or creates something through a seemingly magical process. Since the beginning of time, artists have investigated the ways in which substances interact, combine, and change to create amazing pieces of art. Join us as we experiment, hypothesize, and collaboratively create to build an art installation at CMA through the magic combination of chemistry and art together.

Inspired by the chemical processes used in the artwork, One Ball Total Equilibrium Tank (Spalding Dr. J Silver Series) by Jeff Koons, on loan from Art Bridges. Koons created an uncanny effect of perfect equilibrium by filling a basketball with distilled water and suspending it in a precisely combined solution of distilled water and pure salt. Throughout this project, participants will learn more about this piece and have the opportunity to see it on display in our exhibit, POP! featuring Pop art pulled from CMA's collection and pieces on loan from Art Bridges and Ohio lenders.

FREE TAKE HOME ART KITS

You may use any materials you like to create a chemistry inspired piece (See submission guidelines below). We also have FREE kits available for pickup during regular museum hours, 2/4/22- 3/4/22 (While supplies last, almost gone!!!). Kits will include a variety of chemistry and art materials and a companion education packet filled with resources and step-by-step tutorials on an assortment of experiments culminating in one final piece of abstract art, fun for any age level.

COMMUNITY ART INSTALLATION

The art installation will consist of a perfect grid of squares. Anyone is welcome to contribute to the art installation, which will be installed by participants on the Museum lobby walls. Individuals are encouraged to bring in or mail your submission directly to the Museum, Attn: The Artchemist Project.

WHAT TO SUBMIT:

Submissions are accepted from: 2/4/22- 3/4/22 before 5:00pm

Your piece should demonstrate at least one unique chemistry inspired process or technique and have an "abstract" look to it. For the sake of this project, we are defining abstract art as: a piece of art that does not attempt to represent a person, place, or thing, but instead seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.

Requirements:

*Please note: All materials will be provided in the free art kits. All are welcome to use your own materials as well.

  • Each piece must be an exact 6"x 6"square no larger than 1/2 inch thick.

  • Pieces must be created on a fairly lightweight and sturdy material like card stock, tag board, mat board, or cardboard.

  • Materials must be securely attached, non-toxic, and safe to touch.

FREE VIRTUAL FAMILY DAY

Join us for "The Artchemist Project-  VIRTUAL Schools Out Free Monday" event on President's Day, 2/21/22. Video will go live at 10am on Facebook or view on this webpage. Get an in-depth look at the artwork which inspired the ArtChemist Project while you learn more about this collaborative community art project!
