Learn about and see first hand how artists play magical tricks on our perception creating illusions that deceive the eye. Through creativity, students will create their own 2D illusion art utilizing a variety of drawing and painting materials. Some of the projects include drawing objects that look like they are popping off the page, optical art that looks like it moves, magic realism that combines the ordinary with the extraordinary, and more!

Visit the galleries to see famous ceramic pieces first hand, tour the ceramics lab and learn the process that clay goes through from beginning to end. Analyze commercial, cartoon, and fine art to build your understanding of visual language and then put that knowledge to work. Now offering this NEW workshop in-person! Inspired by the exhibit "Illusions from the CMA Collection: Seeing is Deceiving." Learn a variety of tricks and techniques utilizing light and reflections to create unique optical illusions! Play with glass, mirrors, prisms and more! Delve into the settings on your camera and shoot in modes other than Auto. Both on site and off site photography will take place (weather permitting) within walking distance of the museum. New and experienced photographers are welcome.
Offering this one-time workshop in-person! Enjoy a night creating your own spoon ring from silverware! Spoons will be provided or feel to bring you own heirloom pieces (Malleable silver or silver plated is preferred, no thick steel and stainless steel). Discover traditional metalsmithing techniques of sawing, hammering, and polishing. All skill levels welcome!
*Cost includes all supplies. *If you bring your own pieces, please bring two spoons you don't mind ruining just in case the first attempt does not come out as desired.
Offering this one-time workshop in-person! Design and create your very own wall vase. Use earthy stoneware clay to make a vase that will hang on a wall. Choose patterns and textures to enhance a bouquet of flowers. No experience needed, all levels welcome!

Join our new instructor and glass artist, Laurie Turner, for a fun day learning the basics of stained glass including assembling and soldering techniques to create this beautiful fall themed votive candle holder! The Canton Museum of Art has a new Raku Kiln courtesy of the Canton Ceramics Artists Guild! Learn the fundamentals of Raku firing which is a different firing technique than that of a regular kiln. This process is done outdoors, using a gas kiln. This exciting firing technique involves pulling red hot ceramic ware out of a kiln and placing the ware into a container with combustible materials. During this two-step workshop, students will discuss the process and create their clay pieces on day one and then fire on day two. Students may make and fire up to 3 works.
