There is nothing more satisfying than watching the paint spill across the surface. Now introducing a brand new silk screen printmaking class at the CMA! Have fun exploring this fun stencil process utilizing reduction printing, resist techniques, and the use of photo emulsion. Learn the basic techniques to make your own limited edition prints while experienced students will be able to work building skills to create zines, posters, t-shirts and more!

Twilight Photography & Walking Tour

Inspired by the atmospheric twilight photographs of historic buildings in the exhibit, Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along The Underground Railroad, join us for this special offsite photography workshop and walking tour in downtown Massillon. Meet in the Massillon Museum's Gessner Hall as photographer, historian, and Massillon Museum Archivist Mandy Altimus Stahl introduces nighttime photography tips, and walks you around buildings that existed during the time period of the underground railroad, before the Civil War.

Pumpkin Painting & Cider

Get creative & choose from a variety of techniques to create a spooky or modern (painted and/or stenciled) pumpkins. Students will enjoy festive music and apple cider! Lots of supplies are available so that everyone can choose their designs at their leisure and explore several techniques. We will have stencils, paint, decals, cider and more. And of course, a pumpkin for everyone! Sizes will range around 5-15 pounds per pumpkin, limit one per person. Bring a friend or the whole family, adult & kid friendly!

Inspired by the exhibit, Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along The Underground Railroad, learn about the history of ceramic face jugs (sometimes called "Ugly Jugs") and the important role they played along the Underground Railroad. Then create your own modern/ whimsical Ugly Jug --while learning additive and subtractive clay techniques.
(Families will need to make arrangements to pick up fired pieces two-three weeks after workshop.)

Constellation Lanterns

Inspired by the exhibit, Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along The Underground Railroad, learn about how constellations helped guide runaway slaves along their journey. Studying stars and other night sky patterns students will recreate celestial patterns to contsruct a glowing lantern with a battery lit tea light.

Sketchbook Exploration

Every artist needs a sketchbook! Drawing in a sketchbook regularly is one of the best ways to build and improve drawing skills. Exercise your creativity as well as develop and record ideas for future works. Instructor Douglas Laubacher will share his expertise from working in the classroom and as a professional illustrator. Learn fundamental drawing skills through experimenting with a variety of drawing materials. Students will also visit the galleries to sketch on-site. Fill your sketchbook and push your drawing skills to a whole new level!

Creative Clay

Come explore the endless creativity of clay in this fun yet challenging class. Visit the galleries to see famous ceramic pieces first hand, tour the ceramics lab and learn the process that clay goes through from beginning to end, and create functional, decorative, and sculptural pieces to cherish always! Lessons are changed every session as our experienced, certified instructors can work with student and see them grow! Be sure to sign up for multiple classes!
